  • Chamorro Vent Discovery: 2016 Deepwater Exploration of the Marianas

Hydrothermal vents are most commonly found near areas that are volcanically or tectonically active. So when scientists using NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer set out to explore Chamorro Seamount, which had no known historic eruptions, they weren't expecting to find vent communities...but they did. Seen at a depth of ~980 meters (3,215 feet), the hydrothermal vents on the outer southeast slope of the seamount's summit crater were indeed an unexpected, and exciting, discovery. Hydrothermal vents occur when super-heated water comes out of a fissure of Earth's surface. The geothermally heated water inside the chimney can reach temperatures of several hundred degrees Celsius, while the water surrounding the vent is about two degrees Celsius in the deep sea. As soon as the hot fluid comes in contact ...

The Northern Mariana Islands, officially the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, is an insular area and commonwealth of the United States consisting of 15 islands in the northwestern Pacific Ocean. The territory is in a political union with the United States, and although they have their own constitution, their head of state is the president of the United States. 2. On June 15, 1944, near the end of World War II, the United States military invaded the Mariana Islands, starting the Battle of Saipan, which ended on July 9. Of the 30,000 Japanese troops defending Saipan, fewer than 1,000 remained alive at the battle's end. Many Japanese civilians were also killed, by disease, starvation, enemy fire, and suicide. Approximately 1,000 civilians committed suicide by jumping off the cliffs at Mt. Marpi or Marpi Point. 3. The first people of the Mariana Islands immigrated at some point between 4000 BC and 2000 BC from Southeast Asia. The ancient people of the Marianas raised colonnades of megalithic capped pillars called latte stones upon which they built their homes. The Spanish reported that by the time of their arrival, the largest of these were already in ruins, and that the Chamorros believed the ancestors who had erected the pillars lived in an era when people possessed supernatural abilities. 4. The administrative center is Capitol Hill, a village in northwestern Saipan. However, most publications consider Saipan to be the capital because the island is governed as a single municipality. Saipan’s land area measures 115.4 square kilometers with an estimated population of 53,467. 5. One of the islands of this territory is Agrihan. It’s an island of just 43 square kilometres, and it’s basically one big volcano. The island itself is very densely forested and the only relatively flat land is along a small portion of its shoreline. Despite this, the island always seemed to have a local population. That is, until 1990, when due to increased volcanic activity, all islanders from the 4 settlements were evacuated. 6. Despite being a remote area on the globe, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands has a well-developed infrastructure. 3 airports with paved runways serve the territory, plus 3 with unpaved runways and a heliport. This comes in handy for the tourism industry, which employs half of the workforce. Tourism is a booming industry, which shouldn’t surprise you, since the islands are basically a tropical paradise. 7. Despite heavy influences, the native Chamorro also managed to hold on to their own cultural heritage. In their culture, respect is single most important thing. One common display is the manngingi. This tradition has been around for centuries and involves an elder and a young Chamorro child. The child takes the hand of the elder, places it on their nose and says ñot to the men and ñora to the women with the elders responding diosti ayudi, meaning "God help you". Guam is an unincorporated and organized territory of the United States in Micronesia in the western Pacific Ocean. They are part of the Mariana Islands. The inhabitants of Guam are called Guamanians, and they are American citizens by birth. During the Spanish–American War, the United States captured Guam on June 21, 1898. Under the Treaty of Paris, Spain ceded Guam to the United States on December 10, 1898. 2. Guam’s American colleagues, the Northern Mariana Islands, lie close at hand – a 128-mile hop to the north-east. But Tokyo is a rather larger leap of 1,570 miles over the horizon. Los Angeles? That’s 6,086 miles distant. London? That’s 7,476 miles, and a couple of changes of planes away. 3. Guam is not so remotely placed that it was beyond the telescopes and wanderlust of the great European explorers. In fact, the greatest of them all, Fernando Magellan, spotted it on the first voyage of circumnavigation. While Magellan is often credited as the first man to sail around the world, he was killed en route, dying in a pitched battle with locals in the Philippines on April 27 1521. Guam was effectively the final friendly place Magellan saw before coming to what was a very sticky end. 4. Shoichi Yokoi did not surrender until January 24 1972, having concealed himself deep in the island’s jungle near the southerly village of Talofofo. He had spent the 28 years since America’s recapture of Guam living in an underground cave – despite the fact that, he later revealed, he had learned that the war was over in 1952, but was afraid to declare himself. 5. Guam’s capital is Hagatna. It sits roughly midway along the north-west coast. 6. Guam is the closest landmass to the Mariana Trench, the deepest point on the planet – which sinks all the way to 10,994m below sea level. Apra Harbor, on the west coast, is home to a number of accessible shipwrecks. These include the SMS Cormoran, a German merchant trader which sank during the First World War – and the Tokai Maru, a Japanese freighter that was sunk by an American submarine on August 27 1943. Curiously, these two vessels touch on the seabed. 7. Guam is pretty popular. So much so that, according to figures from the World Trade Organization, there are almost eight (7.9, to be precise) visitors to Guam for every resident. This is a similar ratio to the British Virgin Islands (12.8) and Monaco (8.7). Guam’s population, for the record, is 162,742. Would you believe the fact that Guam does not have sand? Yes, this is true! What you see on the beaches is coral, not sand. Paved roads in Guam are also made by mixing coral and cement together. As soon as the hot fluid comes in contact with ambient sea water, it drastically drops in temperature and hydrothermal mixing occurs. The hot fluids at vents contain minerals such as hydrogen sulfide that provide food for bacteria through a process known as chemosynthesis. Chemosynthetic bacteria are at the heart of deep-sea communities, sustaining life in absolute darkness, where sunlight does not penetrate. The chimney mounds at Chammoro were small (one to two meters high), but a temperature measurement taken at one chimney was as high as 31.14°C. The dominant fauna throughout the dive was stylasterid corals (a type of hydrocoral) and animals known to be found in common association with vents, such as the Alvinoconcha snails and alvinocaridid shrimp seen in the video. Other fauna documented during the dive included unusual amphipods, rare blind (polychelid) lobsters, two species of unidentified demosponges, cutthroat eels and rattails, and a variety of fish swimming near the vents. This was Dive 7 on the third leg of an expedition to investigate and document deepwater environments in and around the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands and the Marianas Trench Marine National Monument. The expedition is part of the three-year Campaign to Address the Pacific monument Science, Technology, and Ocean NEeds (CAPSTONE), an effort to explore high-priority unknown areas in the Pacific marine national monuments. Saipan, Northern Marianas Islands. Saipan's Grotto is sometimes listed as one of the best scuba diving sites in the world. In terms of cavern dives, there is not much out there that can top it. Visibility in The Grotto was far over 50m. In fact I reckon could see nearly 100 meters - the shot at 3:52 is a good example of that. Overall, I really enjoyed Saipan. It's full of World War 2 history, from the Battle for Saipan - next time I would really like to dive some of the relics from the war. With Saipan's Grotto completed, whats next? You can be sure this won't be my last visit to Micronesia. Stay tuned. FLASHLIGHT USED: http://amzn.to/2tQLmP3 --- WARNING TO THOSE PLANNING TO DIVE HERE ---- The Grotto has claimed the lives of at least 6 to 10 divers since 2001, with deaths in 2005, 2006, 2008, including the deaths of students, advanced divers, instructors and dive masters. I don't want to be responsible for a case of "monkey see monkey do". If you are planning to dive here - DO NOT SWIM OUTSIDE like I did. It's not about the distance or breath hold, its about the conditions outside. I swam out once, and I will never swim outside again. This video is edited to make it look like I was outside for a few seconds - the reality is I was stuck outside for around 10 minutes, with big waves pounding the cliff wall making it impossible to 'breath up' on the surface before going back in. Once you surface on the outside, its impossible to see the entrance to the grotto without first swimming down to about 6 or 7 meters. If the waves and current move you out of position just a few meters , you may never find your way back in. If you are stuck on the outside of the cliff, you'll have to make a 1.5km swim in fierce currents and pounding waves to make it to shore. Also be aware that the exceptionally clear water gives you a false perception, and you may find you are way deeper and further into the cave than it looks. I don't want anyone to kill themselves because of what they saw somebody do on youtube. A return to the Northern Mariana Islands shows the US Commonwealth is still grappling with its changing immigration laws. There's been much fear and confusion since the federal government took over border control - and even the local government is concerned federal rules will impede the islands' development. *Aired on Al Jazeera English in August 2016.

AUCKLAND (Pacific Media Watch): Fifty six representatives from 19 different countries around the Pacific region have taken part in the Future Leaders of the Pacific conference in Auckland, where social entrepreneurship was the theme. Those who attended, including youth from outside New Zealand, had a lot of ideas to take away about culture in a digital age. James Arriola says there is a “wealth of knowledge” in New Zealand that his community in the Northern Mariana Islands can learn from.
